Green Roof Tours
The Javits Center is now offering green roof tours to customers interested in taking advantage of experiencing the exciting new ecosystem on Manhattan’s West Side.
Since 2014, 26 bird species and five bat species have been identified on the 6.75-acre green roof, the second largest of its kind in the United States. Comprised of sedum, the green roof has helped to reduce energy throughout the convention center, absorb millions of gallons of storm water and serve as a new home to area wildlife.
Event organizers interested in incorporating a green roof tour as a part of their event should consult with our Sales Department or Event Solutions Department. Depending on the number of tours requested, additional charges may result due to necessary staff resources. In recent months, events have launched social media contests, exhibitor-only tours, photo tours and VIP tours involving the green roof. The green roof has become the signature feature of a building-wide renovation that was completed in 2014 and is part of an award-winning sustainability program, which includes rooftop bee hives that are harvested for honey.
“Our green roof illustrates the significant impact that buildings can have on our environment, and these tours are a wonderful way to communicate that impact,” said Kenneth Sanchez, the Javits Center’s Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President of Facilities Management. “We are proud that our green roof serves as a living laboratory for students and research institutions to better understand the benefits of sustainable building.”
