Javits Center Featured at Museum
The Javits Center’s green roof is featured in a new exhibition called New York at Its Core at the Museum of the City of New York. With more than 400 objects on display, the exhibition details the history of New York City from a small village to the capital of the world.
“Framed around the key themes of money, density, diversity, and creativity, New York City’s history comes alive in this first-of-its-kind exhibition, through the stories of innovation, energy, struggle, and the vision of generations of immigrants, politicians, tycoons, dreamers, master builders, and ordinary New Yorkers,” the Museum says on its website.
Completed in 2014, the Javits Center’s 6.75-acre green roof is featured in the exhibition’s Future City Lab, which explores the challenges that New York City may face in the future, such as climate change.
Comprised of layers of sedum, the green roof is the second largest of its kind in the country and can absorb up to 7 million gallons of storm water. The green, which available for public tours, has become a sanctuary for area wildlife, including 17 bird species, five bat species and 300,000 honeybees. The green roof also has helped to reduce energy costs at the Javits Center – with overall energy consumption down 26% due to a series of sustainable upgrades.
The Javits Center has partnered with several institutions to study the environmental impacts of the green roof, including New York City Audubon, Fordham University, Cooper Union and Drexel University.
